Thompson Landry Gallery Wedding

For lovers of art, great food, and Old Toronto - this wedding is a goldmine. As soon as Marian and Silvano stepped into the Thompson Landry Gallery in the Distillery District, they knew it was the perfect the venue to host their intimate micro wedding. The architectural integrity of the building and the art collection it housed was exactly their vibe, no changes necessary. The bride and groom wanted a high class affair that was also low key and fun; with the addition of the classic Bentley, a personal saxophone player, and some late-night comedy courtesy of two local comedians really put the cherry on top of what was already a beautiful affair.

Marian and Silvano met in her backyard for their first look - Silvano came around the house to see his beautiful bride waiting for him in her stunning vintage lace detailed wedding dress. He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face as he walked up to her and shared their first moments together on their wedding day.  They followed that up by hopping into their vintage Bentley to be chauffeured across the city to the Historical Distillery District.

The bride and groom had decided that they wanted their wedding documented on film. The groom being an architect, and the bride being a total art enthusiast, it was a no brainer decision capture the moments and memories on analog to really elevate the images into nostalgic territory that would’ve otherwise been difficult to replicated. So as we explored the cobblestone streets of the Distillery, we stopped and photographed some tender moments on medium format Kodak film while Brjánn captured documentary and street photography like images on his 35mm Leica rangefinder camera. The romantic feel of the black and white film really helps you appreciate the atmosphere of the wedding day and feels like you’re looking directly into the mind’s eye and seeing a personal memory come to life.

It just so happened that Marian had planned her wedding day to be on the anniversary of her parents wedding, October 10th, a date with significant meaning and a beautiful homage to her mother and father. The couple said their vows surrounded by beautiful artwork and their closest family and friends who were able to be in attendance before the new lockdown restrictions took place in Toronto. As soon as they were pronounced husband and wife they paraded through the streets with a saxophone player leading the way and bringing an exciting energy to parlay into the wedding reception in the gallery across the street.

The evening was full of celebration, laughter, and love, you could really tell how much every single guest meant to Marian and Silvano, as they made sure to talk with all of them throughout the evening. Due to covid-19 restrictions, there was no dancing allowed at the wedding, instead, the bride and groom treated their guests to some standup comedians for the evenings entertainment, capping the night off with some memorable moments, a few awkward laughs and the perfect topic of conversation during the mingling and drinks that followed.

As I continue to photograph weddings in this incredible city, I’m always awed by the uniqueness of every couple and every wedding. A day that reflects your personalities, your history, and your future is truly a recipe for an unforgettable and deeply meaningful wedding day. Marian and Silvano were no exception, they created a day true to who they were and started off their married lives together in a classy fashion. Being part of such an intimate experience is always highly rewarding and something I continually cherish throughout my career as a wedding photographer. I’m excited that my journey with these two isn’t fully over as I get to relive this gorgeous wedding day all over again as we begin to design their hand crafted wedding album.

Archeo Wedding in the Distillery District

A lunch wedding in the heart of downtown Toronto.

The day started off with both the bride and groom getting ready in condo penthouses with some pretty outrageous views of downtown Toronto. The beautiful cityscape in the background of the top floor was also the perfect setting for Lisa and Don’s first look, providing us with an incredible and higher than life start to the entire wedding day.

On the rustic patio of Archeo in the Distillery District, Lisa and Don said their vows to each other and celebrated with their family and friends. It transitioned from a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space, with the classic Old-Toronto red brick backdrop, to an open concept lounge space (couches included), serving as the perfect spot for the cocktail hour.

Lisa and Don kept things informal and light-hearted. It was an afternoon of socializing, eating and basking in the sun. The perfect August weather kept the guests out on the patio where the children were having a blast running around and the adults were mingling in the sunshine among some of the Distillery District’s beautiful classic architecture. The atmosphere was so relaxed, the kind of relaxed you feel at your family BBQ on a long weekend. The bride and groom allowed themselves to spend time with each and every one of their guests who had come from near and far to celebrate this major milestone.

The couple was able to infuse their love of France and everything it meant to them into their decor and favours. They had the ultimate candy bar which was enjoyed by all the guests throughout the afternoon (especially the kids). They also had their own love lock sign as used as their guestbook, mimicking both the bridge in Paris (where the bride and groom went on their honeymoon) and the sign right around the corner in the Distillery District.

We did things a bit backwards in terms of the wedding photography, which in hindsight, provided us with a much more relaxed paced so the bride and groom could bask in the moment. We did all of the bridal party and couples portraits after the wedding had wrapped and we were free to explore the Distillery District. It was such a blast hanging out with their crew with no timeline constraints giving us ample opportunity to explore all the Distillery has to offer. Once we finished up with the bridal party, Lisa, Don and I made our way over to Sugar Beach, which was just a short walk from where their dinner was held, the goal was to give the bride and groom some quality time together in the soft afternoon light. The beach was crowded but it didn’t stop us from making our way right through the middle of it to take advantage of the gorgeous location. Surrounded by sunbathers we got some of the most unique portraits (and a few waves from boaters on the lake), but ultimately, Lisa and Don’s connection created a bubble around them as they enjoyed being in one another’s arms for the first time alone on the wedding day. Despite being among an eclectic group of Toronto residents, we ultimately had moments where we felt entirely on our own. I was sucked into their beautiful world just long enough to capture it.
